Abstrakt
Artykuł przedstawia pogląd George’a Johna Romanesa na relację między religią a nauką. Romanes był dziewiętnastowiecznym angielskim biologiem ewolucyjnym zainteresowanym również teologią. Według Romanesa nauka ma wskazywać przyczyny konkretnych zjawisk, natomiast religia jest ogólną teorią rzeczywistości i zakłada, że wszystko jest ostatecznie spowodowane przez inteligentnego sprawcę. Romanes twierdzi, że w swoich czystych postaciach nauka i religia nie mają logicznie żadnego punktu wspólnego. Jednak do niedawna religia wpływała na naukę. Skutkiem powszechności wiary powstał nawyk odnoszenia wszystkich zjawisk do bóstwa. Gdy jedna z tych aktywności przekracza właściwe sobie granice, próbując posługiwać się metodami drugiej, następuje chaos. Było tak w przypadku próby wyjaśnienia konkretnych zjawisk za pomocą religijnej teorii przyczyn ostatecznych, czyli teorii inteligentnego projektu. Romanes wskazuje, że zwolennicy argumentu z projektu zbyt szybko uznają, iż oprócz projektanta nie mogą istnieć inne przyczyny doskonałego przystosowania organizmów, przez co od razu zaczynają poszukiwać przykładów potwierdzających ich tezę. Darwin natomiast postanowił znaleźć inne przyczyny. Pojawienie się darwinowskiej teorii ewolucji uznał Romanes za przełomowy moment, w którym to nauka zaczęła istotnie oddziaływać na religię.
